The Social Security Disability process can be frustrating and confusing, but Yocum Law is here to help. We have years of experience navigating the system, from application to District Court appeals, and helping people secure the benefits that they deserve.
Social Security defines disability as the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity because of a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that is either expected to result in death or has lasted or is expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months.
You can apply for Social Security Disability/SSI benefits online at www.ssa.gov or by setting up a phone appointment with your local Social Security office. Our experts at Yocum Law are happy to walk you through the process, if you have questions!
Social Security Disability is definitely not a quick fix. Once you complete your application, it generally takes about 3 to 6 months to get a decision.
Unfortunately, many people are denied at this level and an appeal is necessary.
Once the appeal is filed (request for Reconsideration), it can take another 3 to 6 months to get a decision. If you are denied again, you can appeal and Request a Hearing in front of an Administrative Law Judge. Although the process is moving faster than it was several years ago, it still may take about 8 - 12 months to get a hearing scheduled.
If you are denied at the hearing level, there are several additional levels of appeal and each averages about 8 - 12 months.
